K-Drama Remakes of Western Shows

There are several remakes in the Korean drama world. They have famous movies and dramas that were remakes of Japan, Taiwan, China, and other countries’ films. Even in the past years, there were also few dramas that were adapted from the Western side. It’s not new in Korea but it seems like these days, there are emerging upcoming dramas that were depicted from Western films and series.

Here are the new and not so new remakes of Korean dramas:

Jane The Virgin

The CW series Jane The Virgin will reportedly have its Korean remake and actress Im Soo Hyang will reportedly lead the drama. The premiere date and broadcast network are still under discussion.

Money Heist

The popular Netflix series Money Heist will have its Korean version. Here are the main leads of the upcoming series: Actor Yoo Ji Tae will play as the Professor, Park Hae Soo as Berlin, Jeon Jong Seo as Tokyo, Lee Won Jong as Moscow, Kim Ji Hoon as Denver, Jang Yoon Joo as Nairobi, Kim Ji Hoon as Helsinki, and Lee Kyu Ho as Oslo. Lee Hyun Woo and Im Ji Yeon were later added to the cast as Rio and Seoul. Im Ji Yeon will play the character that was not originally part of the series. Money Heist is already in the middle of production.

Criminal Justice

Another upcoming drama is the Korean remake of BBC’s TV series Criminal Justice. The Korean version of the series will be titled One Ordinary Day. Kim Soo Hyun and Cha Seung Won will work together for the upcoming Korean remake. It will have 8 episodes and will air in the last quarter of 2021.

Undercover

Undercover starring Ji Jin Hee and Kim Hyun Joo is a remake of the BBC One television series of the same name. It aired on April 2021 through JTBC. This is not the first time that Ji Jin Hee was part of a Korean version of a western drama. He was also included in the 2019 drama Designated Survivor: 60 Days. The drama got an average ratings of 4.614 percent in Seoul.

18 Again

If you didn’t know, 18 Again was actually based from the 2009 American film 17 Again starring Zac Efron. The Korean version was led by Kim Ha Neul, Yoon Sang Hyun, Lee Do Hyun, and more. Many people loved this drama for its heartwarming plot and the actors’ great acting skills.

The World of the Married

Lastly, the highest-rated cable drama in history, The World of the Married was depicted from 2015’s BBC One’s drama series Doctor Foster written by Mike Bartlett. The Korean drama was a big hit in Korea and in Asia. KIm Hee Ae, Park Hae Joon, and Han So Hee were the main leads of the drama.
