K-Pop Terms You Should Know

Getting into K-Pop is like entering a new world. Words and culture are very much different from what we’ve seen in Hollywood and your local artists. Here are some of the terms you might wonder what they mean and how they work.

FANCHANTS or CHEERING GUIDE

“Fanchants” are words or phrases fans cheer before and during the artist’s performance. Fanchants most often include the names of the members of a group. This way, fans, and the artist connect through the exchange of energy between the two.

SUB-UNIT

Sub-units are smaller groups formed from a larger group. Sub-units are grouped with members who are into the same genres that are different from their original group. A great example is the sub-units of NCT; NCT U, NCT127, NCT Dream, and WayV.

SASAENG

“Sasaeng” or the stalkers. These are fans who have crossed the line. They invade the privacy of the artist; waiting for them in the corridors of their apartments, seating next to the artist during the same flight, writing a letter using their blood, and many more.

FANSITE

A fansite is a fan and a photographer dedicated to a particular idol. They take high-definition photographs and videos for their own produced merch. They are also responsible for idols’ birthday projects, coffee truck gifts, and luxury gifts.
