Manila’s Most Memorable K-Show: Super Junior’s Super Show 9

Super Juniors Super Show concert has been a tradition in the Philippines already. Philippine ELFs, now also called as the Titas of K-Pop have been with Pulp Live World and Super Junior ever since their concert tour “Super Show” was brought to the country.

Almost every year, Super Junior and PH ELFs meet through Supershow. The concert hall is always jam-packed and Super Junior is as energetic as always like it’s their first time in the country.

Then, the pandemic happened. The tradition has been halted and for more than 2 years, they weren’t given a chance to be together in one place.

In June of 2022, Pulp Live World announced that finally, Super Junior is coming back to the Philippines. The Philippines is one of the first few countries that Super Junior visited after not having a world tour for years.

The week before the D-DAY of SS9 in Manila, everyone was super excited and hyping the event. From the ELF-producer Happee Sy, the Super Junior members specially Yesung, and most especially the PH ELFs who have waited long enough to meet the group once again.

The same week, it was announced that member Choi Siwon tested positive for COVID19 and he will not be able to take part in SS9 in Manila.

On the day when Super Junior is heading to Manila, many got worried about the interactions of the members. Especially when Leeteuk went to each member’s vans and when they went out of their cars, the members were rather quiet than their usual playful selves. Also, member Eunhyuk was not seen flying with the members.

At midnight of August 6, SM Entertainment and Label SJ then officially revealed the situation. The agency shared that Eunhyuk’s father passed away and the member won’t be able to join the Manila leg.

At noon, Label SJ released its official statement about “Super Junior World Tour – Super Show 9: ROAD in Manila.

The agency stated, “After many long discussions between the promoter (Pulp Live World) and Super Junior members, it will be difficult to properly hold the concert as scheduled. However, the members wanted to meet and greet the fans who came to Manila to attend the concert.” They also asked the fans with tickets to be at the venue on time.

After the gates were open, the arena was filled with ELFs patiently waiting for Super Junior.

The arena has never seen a mood like this before. Songs of Super Junior were played before the event began, but this time, they only played the ballad tracks of the group.

The event began with host Kring Kim coming up to the stage and relaying the official statement of SM Entertainment as well as Pulp Live World.

They stated, “We would like to sincerely thank all ELFs that came to SS9 in Manila. The members of Super Junior have decided after a long discussion that it will be hard to proceed with today’s concert due to the unfortunate situation of member Eunhyuk. However, to express gratitude to all ELF who have traveled this far, the Super Junior members will come up to the stage to greet everyone. Once again, our sincerest gratitude to all the audiences of the Super Junior Super Show 9 Concert. Thank you.”

Super Junior then appeared all together in their white outfits. The first thing that they uttered was “thank you.” They then greeted everyone with the iconic introduction of Super Junior. Filipino ELFs responded with their iconic cheers. Each member then proceeded with their greetings, gratitude, and apologies for the situation.

They also promised that there will be more chances to meet next time and they will then be complete in greeting PH ELFs.

Some members got emotional while relaying their messages. Meanwhile, ELFs were also very supportive of the members. While ELFs were also emotional about the situation, they cheered the group and chanted “괜찮아” meaning “it’s okay.”

Leeteuk, the leader of the group revealed that the members decided to still go to Manila despite the situation to greet the ELFs that are waiting for them. He also shared that the group discussed it thoroughly until midnight about the concert. He said, “Supershow should be a fun, happy, and hopeful event and to give ELFs that, SS9 in Manila is not canceled but rather it is postponed.” Leeteuk also shared that he requested Pulp Live World if there can be a second day of the Supershow because some of the ELFs might be affected by the postponement of the concert and this can be the solution for others.

The leader ended his message by relaying his love for ELFs and the present staff. He also reassured everyone that they will return to the Philippines as soon as possible. He also shared that as a little token, the Super Junior members will perform songs before they go back to Korea.

Super Junior’s first song is “My Wish” from their latest release, the 11th album “The Road: Keep On Going.”

Followed by their track “Callin” from their special album that was released in February this year. The members went to the extended stage where they can get closer to ELFs.

Super Junior then relayed their ending messages. The group thanked ELFs for being with them for 18 years.

The group ended the event with their song “More Days With You.” A song from their 10th album “The Renaissance.” While singing, the Super Junior members greeted and bowed to the fans.

Super Junior once again thanked ELFs and bowed together after their last song.

PH ELFs are known as the LAUDEST crowd. This time, not only were the cheers loud but also the love, support, and understanding were very evident. This showcased the deep relationship and trust of fans and Super Junior.

Host Kring Kim returned to the stage and shared that everyone should keep their tickets because they will be valid again for the new date of Supershow 9.

The meet and greet event was brief but the love felt inside the arena will stay in ELFs and Super Junior’s hearts for a long time.

The decision of Super Junior and the promoter Pulp Live World garnered praises from the netizens. They were praised for professionally handling the situation and for respecting the mourning of Eunhyuk and the rest of the group who are already considered family. ELFs were also praised for their love, respect, understanding, and support of the group.

Despite the situation, Super Junior still showed up and even performed for the ELFs which took time and effort to attend the concert. They could have informed the fans about the situation through an official statement but still, the group personally relayed the situation.

Kudos to the promoter for agreeing with the decision and not forcing the group to proceed with the concert.

As Super Junior leader Leeteuk says, It’s not the END but AND.”
